Prof Simon Best
Simon is Chairman of ProMetic Inc., a Canadian Rare-Disease drug company quoted on the TSX. He previously built three substantial ventures – Zeneca Plant Science, Roslin BioMed and Ardana – and has a solid track record in financing and growing biotech companies. Simon is also an experienced Angel, Venture Capital and Private Equity Investor. Between 2005 and 2010, he was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence for TVM Capital’s MENA Fund in UAE and India and in 2008 co-founded PAR Equity LLP, an Edinburgh based investment syndicate. He is a past Vice-Chairman of the US Biotechnology Industry Organisation and Chairman of the UK BioIndustry Association. In 2008, he was awarded an OBE and appointed a Visiting Professor of Medicine by the University of Edinburgh.
Dr Mike Capaldi
Mike has held senior roles in the pharmaceutical and life sciences industry since 1982, both in the UK and the USA. Previous large companies included Ciba Geigy, SmithKline & French and Amersham International where he headed up the Drug Development Services in the USA – later becoming an Executive Vice-President in Nycomed Amersham’s healthcare division. For the last 18 years, Mike has worked in the biotech/technology sector serving as executive director on the Boards of both publically listed and private companies including Core Group plc, Oxford Asymmetry plc, Mindweavers plc, Synaptica Ltd, Scancell plc, Hunter-Fleming Ltd and CMP Therapeutics Ltd (in the latter four companies as CEO). Mike is also currently a non-executive director of Stealthyx Therapeutics, Roslin Cells and Synaptica. Chief Financial Officer
Iain was previously Finance Director of the National Trust for Scotland. Prior to this he had spells as Finance Director for Grant Management (UK) Ltd, Axway Software SA and Sopra Group. Before this he was Chief Operating Officer for Scottish Widows Investment Partnership (SWIP). Dr Howard Marriage
Howard is a serial entrepreneur, having been actively involved in numerous companies, both large and small. His early career was spent in Genzyme, ending up as Senior Director of Corporate Development in Europe. He joined Cyclacel in 1998 and became Executive Director Research Operations and Business Development. He left Cyclacel in 2004 to found his own consultancy company, Biotech Innovation and Future Health. Since then, Howard has founded and raised finance for numerous companies, still serving as Chairman for many of these including Chivaron, Dundee Cell Products, NeurocentRx, and Aquila Biomedical. Dr Giles Dudley

Giles joined BioQuarter formally in 2011 although he had been previously working with the BioQuarter team in his role as Edinburgh Research and Innovation’s Business Development Manager for the University of Edinburgh’s College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Giles has nearly a decade’s worth of experience in commercial roles in the healthcare sector, including business development, licensing, new venture formation, product development and general management. Before coming to Edinburgh, he worked at Invitrogen and was a Business Enterprise Fellow at Oxford University & Isis Innovation (one of the UK’s leading technology transfer organisation). Dr Gareth Blades
Company Creation Executive
Gareth joined Sunergos Innovations in July 2016. Gareth comes from a broad academic background; he attained a first in Neuroscience, completed an MPhil in Nanotechnology and Enterprise at Cambridge and a DPhil in Systems Biology at Oxford.
After completing his DPhil, he stayed in Oxford working for a boutique strategy consultancy helping clients gain a greater understanding of industries such as manufacturing, facilities management and telecoms.
In 2015, Gareth joined a healthcare corporate advisory firm, PharmaVentures. During his time there he worked on a broad array of projects including business development and licensing mandates, M&A deals, as well as technology evaluations and valuations.

Emma joined Sunergos Innovations in November 2015 from Aptuit. Prior to that she was VP Corporate Business Development at Aesica Pharmaceuticals, a contract pharmaceutical and manufacturing company in the USA. Previous to that, she had worked in three other contract research organisations: CXR Biosciences, Charles River Laboratories and Quinitiles. Dr Susan Bodie
Business Development Executive
Susan joined the Edinburgh BioQuarter in September 2013. Previously she had worked for 11 years as Senior Study Director for Charles River Laboratories, a major contract research organization. Her role in Charles River involved leading a commercial team to generate new business from a wide range of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as well as ensuring work was performed to the standards required. Business Development Executive
Alex joined Sunergos Innovations in April 2016. Previously he had worked for seven years as Territory Sales Manager for VIANEX/MSD, the biggest Greek pharmaceutical company and a distributor of MSD’s products in the local market. His role was to manage key accounts in the assigned territory in a wide portfolio of products as well as implementing marketing policies, analysing and identifying new clients.
Alex holds three degrees: an MSc in Food Biotechnology, a master’s in Pharmaceutical Marketing and an MBA from the University of Strathclyde with distinction. Lorraine joined the University of Edinburgh in 2001 after taking some time out to travel. She worked in Educational Studies’ teaching office then as Site Administrator for The College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine on the Little France campus before securing a position with the Edinburgh BioQuarter Commercialisation Team in 2010 and now Sunergos Innovations.
